West Broward, Coral Glades win state titles in cheerleading

Broward County continued its success at the state cheerleading championships Thursday as West Broward and Coral Glades each walked away with state championships at Silver Spurs Arena in Kissimmee.

West Broward followed up its success last season by winning its second consecutive state title. The Bobcats dominated the competition finishing with 90.825 points in the finals of the Class 2A Large School Non-tumbling division. They finished over 11 points ahead of runner-up Blanche Ely’s 79.175.

Coral Glades won its first state title by taking home the championship of the Class 2A Small School non-tumbling division. The Jaguars finished with 75.1 points to finish ahead of Flagler Palm Coast’s 70.6 points in the finals. Coral Glades came in second after the semifinal round behind Apopka Wekiva.

But a stronger performance in the finals clinched the title.

West Broward led after both rounds.

Boys’ basketball

•  St. Thomas Aquinas 38, Cypress Bay37: Cypress Bay let St. Thomas Aquinas off the hook in a defensive slugfest during the quarterfinals of the BCAA Big 8 boys’ basketball tournament at Pompano Beach.

Raiders forward Kendall Roberts stole an inbounds pass and went coast-to-coast for a layup with 1:59 left and added two free throws with 4.2 seconds left to seal the win for Aquinas, which fought back from a 10-point third-quarter deficit.

Lightning forward Ben Antoine, who dominated the Raiders’ frontline and finished with a game-high 21 points, missed a runner at the final buzzer.

Pape N’Diaye had a team high 18 points for the Raiders.

Aquinas will play top seed Blanche Ely (22-1, Class 7A No. 1 and ESPN FAB 50 No. 18) in a semifinal matchup 6:30 Friday.

FABIAN LYON

WRESTLING

Although Miami Monsignor Pace collected its sixth consecutive district wrestling title Thursday, it didn’t come easy thanks to a very game competitor.

Chaminade Madonna — down by as many as 35 points during the championship round — pulled within striking distance before finishing in second with 219 points to the Spartans’ 233 at Miami Jackson High.

“Mostly, we’ve just really been building on working as a team rather than an individual basis this year,” Chaminade Madonna coach John Herl said.

“We’ve got five seniors in the lineup — all five did really well, they’ve been ranked all year — so just them producing with the extra points to get us through. We started to close the door toward the end on Pace, but it was just too strong on the lower weights.”

Pace jumped out to a big lead when its first six wrestlers, including senior Ray Moreno, took home championships. After the first four matches — all of which Pace won — the Spartans were ahead 212-177.

Moreno won his third district title with an 8-3 decision over Mourning’s Marcus Martinez in the 106-pound class. Moreno, who earned the regional title last season and finished sixth at the state tournament, said the team calls its lightweights the “Fab Four.”

“I think I should’ve wrestled better, I was getting my shots off, but I’m definitely going to work hard this week so I can get that regional championship next week,” Moreno said.

Pace led Chaminade by 10.5 points heading into the final round of competition. But the Lions began to catch up when it faced the Spartans in three championship bouts, with Chaminade winning all three.

In a close contest between state qualifiers, senior Daniel Colatori won a 7-5 decision in overtime over Danny Suarez in the 145-pound weight class. With 14 seconds left and Colatori ahead by two points, Suarez had tied the score to force an extra minute.

In the other two finals, Nick Taubrau pinned Robert Quero at 4:17, and Trenton Greene was disqualified for too many penalties against Robert Kratman.

Behind Pace and Chaminade — the lone Broward County program competing against seven Miami-Dade Schools for the District 15-1A title — was host Miami Jackson. The Generals finished with 144 points.
