The Jan 22 article Shrinking defense budget worries small businesses overlooks how defense cuts would also eliminate technology innovations uniquely created by defense research and development and modernization innovations that drive our economy and help keep U.S. troops out of harm’s way.
The Internet, jet engines, laser surgery and even a new breast-cancer vaccine all were developed by military researchers working over many years with stable funding. Only a reliable government partner can create those unique conditions as private corporations are fixated on immediate profits.
Defense cuts will certainly cause massive job losses. With 39,246 employed in Florida’s aerospace and defense industry, unemployment could skyrocket. For innovation, national security and jobs these drastic cuts are lose-lose-lose.
