Marchesa is having its moment. The fashion label codesigned by Miramax head Harvey Weinstein’s wife Georgina Chapman was front and center on the red carpet at the SAG Awards.
While Weinstein was celebrating Jean Dujardin’s Best Actor win for The Artist, his Birtish wife, along with her business partner Keren Craig, was busy gussying up the competition.
The Help star, Best Actress Viola Davis wore a Grecian silk chiffon Marchesa gown with antique gold detailing. “The white against my dark skin. The gold, it made me feel very elegant, sexy and it’s comfortable,’’ Davis told the Associated Press Sunday night.
Also wearing Marchesa was Colombian bombshel l Sofia Vergara, in a custom-made magenta strapless fitted mermaid gown. George Clooney’s girlfriend du jour Stacy Kiebler was another fan of the house with her black lace fishtail number.
Will Marchesa be a hit at the Oscars as well? Its versatility with actresses of every age is a definite plus. Last year, True Grit nominee Hailee Steinfeld stepped out in a cream creation that the then 14-year-old helped design. The ballerina style piece had feather-like beads and a tutu skirt. And High School Musical’s Vanessa Hudgens chose a mini silver sparkler to heat up the Oscar parties.
Yes, Chapman, who gave birth to a daughter India in September 2010, is indeed on a high. The former model, 35, is also a judge along with Isaac Mizrahi on Project Runway All Stars 9 p.m. Thursdays on My Lifetime.
It will be interesting to see who will don her line at the Academy Awards, which close out the trophy giving season. Fashions are likely to be more staid at the serious and more formal ceremony next month, though the SAGs saw a surprising amount of black. Angelina Jolie kept her look simple in a black, cowl-neck draped gown by British designer Jenny Packham. She paired it with vintage jewelry. “I don’t often wear it, and I liked these pieces when I saw them,’’ she said.
Albert Nobbs star Glenn Close also went with black. “I love it because it’s Zac Posen,’’ Close said, noting a link between the taffeta-and-tulle gown and her nominated film. “I think it has intonations of a Victorian dress, because Albert Nobbs takes place in Victorian Ireland. Because Prince Albert had died, Queen Victoria always wore black so a lot of people wore black and also this same material,’’ she said. “So I feel comfortable and fabulous.’’
Julianna Margulies went the opposite, almost white. She wore a label she had been longing to wear for a while: Calvin Klein. It was a fitted, embroidered strapless dress in a shade of dove gray. “I love the fabric and the way it just flowed down. It’s comfortable, and I thought it was pretty,’’ The Good Wife star said.
