A driver who got out to check a caution light in her Ford Taurus was run over and killed by the vehicle after the passenger apparently hit the gas pedal by accident, according to Miami police.
The tragedy happened around 11 Sunday night in front of a home in the 4200 block of Northwest Fourth Street in Miami. The victim was identified as 58-year old Norma Diaz of Pembroke Pines.
"Apparently she exited her seat upon noticing something weird or strange in her car and exited the car not realizing it was in reverse," police spokesman Willie Moreno said.
"A passenger noticed this and attempted to place the brakes on by reaching over on the other side, but accidentally accelerated the vehicle. The victim was still in the doorway area and the door knocked her down. The vehicle then drove over her."
Moreno said Diaz was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital, but died shortly afterward. Foul play isn’t suspected.
"Unless we get an independent witness or somebody tells us they were arguing or something like that we go based on statements and from what we have this appears just to be an accident," Moreno said. "The passenger tried to reach over to the driver side and tried to stop the vehicle. It just didn’t happen.".
