American sailors medaled in four of 10 classes following Saturday’s final round of racing in the 2012 Rolex Miami Olympic Classes Regatta on Biscayne Bay.

U.S. Olympic team member Zach Railey of Clearwater led the 25-boat Finn class wall-to-wall in fleet racing Monday through Friday, then followed up with gold in Saturday’s medal round.

Skipper Erik Storck of Huntington, N.Y., and crew Trevor Moore of North Pomfret, Vt., finished first in Saturday’s medal race in the 49er class but took silver overall in the regatta, trailing the Austrian team of Nico Delle Karth and Nikolaus Resch by 17 points.

Farrah Hall of Annapolis won silver in women’s RS:X competition behind Mexico’s Demita Vega De Lille. And Elizabeth Kratzig-Burnham of Miami was part of the bronze-winning women’s match-racing team with skipper Sally Barkow of Nashotah, Wis., and Alana O’Reilly of Charleston, S.C. The British team of Lucy Macgregor, Annie Lush and Kate Macgregor won gold.

The Rolex is the second of seven ISAF World Cup events, and the only one held on U.S. soil. It attracted more than 500 sailors from 44 countries who used it as a tuneup for this summer’s Olympic Games in London or to qualify their country for the Games.

Railey, 27, a University of Miami graduate who won silver in Finns in the 2008 Olympics, will be accompanied on his second trip to the big show this summer by his younger sister Paige, 24, who is making her U.S. Olympic debut in the Laser Radial class.

Paige Railey, the defending Rolex champ, picked up gold in Saturday’s medal round but finished eighth overall in a fleet of 60 boats. As soon as her final race was over, she steered her boat over to the Finn course to watch her brother compete.

“This is his first World Cup that he won, so I wanted to be there. It’s huge,” Paige said.

Quipped her brother: “She won her race and made the pressure on me to win mine.”

All but two spots on the U.S. Olympic Sailing Team had been awarded before the Rolex. The two vacancies are in women’s match racing and RS:X, which will be decided at later regattas. Women’s match racing aboard Elliot 6m boats will make its Olympic debut this summer.

Miami Olympians Mark Mendelblatt and Brian Fatih put in a solid performance in the 29-boat Star class, finishing seventh in the medal round and seventh overall. Reigning world champions Robert Scheidt and Bruno Prada of Brazil took gold in Stars.

  • South Florida Fishing Report

IslamoradaSportFishing.com reported plenty of dolphin are being caught outside the outer reef. Most of the action has been under birds and around floating debris 10 to 14 miles offshore. Bottom fishermen were catching a lot of mutton, mangrove and yellowtail snapper plus an assortment of grouper while fishing the reefs. In the gulf and bay, cobia, sea trout and permit can be found over the wrecks and rock piles. Tarpon are being caught along the bridges and in the channels on live blue crabs.

Catching blackfin tuna requires plenty of patience

It’s late May and many South Florida offshore anglers are fishing in the twilight zone.

Back to their love: the precarious sea

After 11 days as temporary land lovers in Miami, the sailors of the Volvo Ocean Race returned to the place where they are most fulfilled: The sea.
