The Cuban Communist Party is holding its First National Congress in Havana this weekend, with Raul Castro presiding, and the government newspaper Granma reports that its theme is there is no ideology without economy.
Granma published the agenda in Saturdays editions.
The meetings essential purpose, it said, is delving deeper into the partys work to accelerate the development of society and secure the Economic and Social Guidelines approved at another congress last year.
Some key goals of the meeting, according to Granma:
Establishing time limits for leadership responsibilities in the party organizations at all levels, suggesting that Castro himself was proposing a term limit on the presidency he got from big brother Fidel. Raul is 80.
Diversification of the party with emphasis on the promotion of women, blacks, mestizos and young people to leadership posts, both political and in other organizations and institutions.
Updating the role of the part in Cubas economic model and the progress of the economy.
Also on the agenda, according to Granma: Making the work of the party ever more dynamic by breaking with past practices and old vices, such as improvisation, formalism, false unanimity and opportunism.
The Cuban News Agency noted that the meetings opening coincides with the 159th anniversary of Cuban National Hero José Martís birthday.
