The University of South Florida will look to replace a pair of three-year starters on the offensive line and another duo of multiyear starters in the secondary.
Accordingly, USF brought in four defensive backs and three offensive linemen. Gainesville cornerback Chris Givins highlights the secondary commitments, and 6-3, 263-pound Kofi Amichia from Powder Springs, Ga., could compete to replace Jeremiah Warren at guard.
Perhaps the most touted recruit in the class is 6-4, 225-pound tight end Sean Price from Citra. Price, who chose USF over Oklahoma, is considered one of the top five tight ends in the class of 2012.
Recruiting service Rivals.com rated USF’s class 50th in the country and fifth in the Big East. Scout.com has the Bulls as the 67th-best class and last in the Big East.
FAU
It has been a busy two months for coach Carl Pelini. Not only has he had to transition to a new school and hire a staff, but also he has had to recruit almost entirely from scratch.
Pelini said he is looking at between 21 and 27 signees. New systems will dictate some of FAU’s recruiting — Pelini is bringing in a 4-3 defense and a spread offense. Two defensive ends have signed with the Owls in the past three weeks: Roosevelt Donaldson from Southridge and Shalom Ogbonda from Sugar Land, Texas. FAU has hauled in a pair of running backs in Jeremy Gaskins from Delray Beach, and Martese Jackson from Fort Scott Community College in Fort Scott, Kan. The Owls also landed Braddock’s Jarvon Anderson, who is an athlete but played some running back in the Bulldogs’ Wing-T offense.
“It’s an exciting time right now,” Pelini said “I think the class will open some eyes right away.”
Jacksonville
Coach Kerwin Bell has engineered an impressive on-field turnaround at Jacksonville, as the past four years have been the best in the program’s 14 year history.
Now, Bell said, the Dolphins’ success is translating into the world of recruiting.
“The whole state of Florida knows about our program,” Bell said. “High school coaches are really on board with what we’re trying to do here, which gives you a chance to get better players.”
Bell said Jacksonville is expecting around 20 signees, including a trio of transfers: offensive linemen Tramell Williams (South Carolina) and Dylan Bostick (Appalachian State), as well as defensive back Jamal Reid (Miami).
Reid spent his time at Miami in the secondary, but Bell said Reid will get an opportunity to play wide receiver for the Dolphins.
B-CU
Bethune-Cookman University loses several multiyear starters in the secondary, including former Archbishop Curley star Michael Williams. The Wildcats will get help from Hollywood Hills safety Terry Harden, who turned down several BCS schools for Bethune-Cookman.
The Wildcats will look to two jumbo-sized commitments — 6-5 Dariusz Bladek and 6-7 Mike Jones — to help them replace a trio of departing offensive linemen.
FAMU
With the Rattlers losing a pair of starting cornerbacks to graduation, coach Joe Taylor is excited about Neal Cunningham, a 6-2, 180-pound defensive back who enrolled early after graduating from Pompano Beach.
