As primary approaches, PBS show examines mood of Florida’s senior voters

Florida’s senior vote, a powerful factor in Florida’s primary, will be analyzed Friday in a weekly PBS newsmagazine Need to Know or NTK.

The program is anchored by Jeff Greenfield who traveled through the state to examine the political power of the state's large senior population, which votes in proportionally greater numbers than any other group.

That fact is especially relevant this year with talk of Social Security and Medicare reform, two issues strongly opposed by many senior groups.

Florida’s senior voters pose a problem for all candidates promoting entitlement reform that would reduce the national debt: how to pare the benefits without alienating seniors in one of the nation's most politically important states?

Miami Herald political writer Marc Caputo was among those interviewed for answers.

In the Miami-Fort Lauderdale market, NTK will air at 11 p.m. on Friday on WPBT2-Channel 2.
