IN MY OPINION

Louisville, Strong stocking up with local talent again

floridakids1@aol.com

When spring rolls around and college coaches start pouring down to Miami-Dade and Broward counties in record numbers, keep your eye on the schools that are starting to feel comfortable in an area that has long been open to schools from across the nation.

Buying into the fact that the University of Miami should get every top athlete that comes out of this region is absurd.

It has never happened that way.

In the 1960s and ’70s, top-flight prospects left this area the same way they are fleeing now.

It might have been a different time, with less emphasis on recruiting, but the objective is still the same.

With National Signing Day coming up Wednesday, you can watch as schools outside this area continue their climb, using local prospects to fuel their programs. The perfect example is what has happened with Charlie Strong and Louisville.

The love affair with the Louisville program goes back decades.

But even when Howard Schnellenberger was coach of the Cardinals, with many Florida ties, Louisville never came in and snapped up some of the best talent in the area like Strong is doing now.

By getting quality players the past two years, including Northwestern standouts Teddy Bridgewater, Eli Rogers and Michaelee Harris, the Cardinals have played hard ball in the Big East, rebuilding with youth and winning games.

After coming away with three of the top players in Miami-Dade County a year ago in Bridgewater, Gerrod Holliman and Andrew Johnson, Louisville is back at it again, outrecruiting Southeastern Conference, Atlantic Coact Conference and other Big East schools in this area.

To measure the quality of players Louisville is adding to its list for the class of 2012, all you have to do is look at the credentials players such as Keith Brown (LB, Norland), James Burgess, Jr. (LB, Homestead), Abraham Garcia (OL, University School), Brandon Radcliff (RB, Columbus), Pedro Sibea (DL, Homestead) and Brandon Snell (WR, Carol City) bring to the table.

Brown was an early UM commit. So was Burgess. Sibea and Snell could emerge as role players in their first season.

Louisville is not the only program that knows its way around South Florida.

West Virginia, Minnesota, UCLA and now Mike Leach’s Washington State program have also come in and started the pipeline rolling with Norland safety Feddie Davey.

If you happened to watch or attend this year’s Orange Bowl, you know what the 305 and 954 area codes’ talent infusion has done to elevate the Mountaineers.

This class will only keep that ball rolling with Imarjaye Albury (DT, Northwestern), Torry Clayton (RB, South Dade), Darreal Joyner (WR, Central), Devonte Mathis (WR, Miramar) and Hallandale safety Sean Walters, who is already in Morgantown.
