Rina upgraded to major hurricane

A slight change to cane count

On further review, the National Hurricane Center has made a slight change to last year’s storm statistics.

A post-season analysis forecasters at the West Miami-Dade County center released Thursday upgraded one storm to major hurricane status — Hurricane Rina, which skirted Central America in late October. The annual reviews occasionally produce upgrades or downgrades. That brings the final 2011 total to 19 tropical storms, with seven becoming hurricanes. Four, with the addition of Rina, became powerful major storms. Only one, Irene, which hit North Carolina and swept up the East Coast, struck the U.S. mainland. The number of hurricanes overall was close to the average of six but there were twice the average number of major hurricanes. The 19 named storms overall tied for the third-highest on record with 1887, 1995 and 2010.
