Cuban defector and Miami Marlins target Yoenis Cespedes eligible to talk to teams

Let the bidding begin for Yoenis Cespedes.

Cespedes was granted free agency status Wednesday by Major League Baseball, meaning teams can now negotiate for the Cuban outfielder.

On his weekly radio show on 790-The Ticket, Marlins president David Samson said the team would “try as hard as we can” to land the player.

“I wouldn’t expect him to sign here in the next day, two days, one week maybe two weeks,” Samson said.

Meanwhile, the Marlins on Wednesday signed veteran outfielder Austin Kearns to a minor-league contract and invited him to spring training.

Kearns has played 10 seasons in the majors.
