Comfort food queen Michelle Bernstein may be planning to open up a new “to-go” version of her Upper Eastside restaurant, Michy’s, at a new location off of Biscayne Boulevard, but she has yet to make any official announcement.
The new spot would be located in a retail space currently under construction at 6101 Biscayne Blvd. which is owned by Michy’s part-owner and restaurateur Steven Perricone, who also owns Perricone’s Marketplace & Cafe in Brickell.
Perricone is building a $1.2 million, 10,000-square-foot commercial structure, according to the Chariff Realty Group, who is in charge of getting business tenants for the new space. The project’s architect, Dean Lewis, says the building will include a double-height glass facade, a V-shape chevron roof canopy, rear gated parking and landscaping.
Chariff Realty Group has posted on their Facebook page that Michelle Bernstein has pre-leased one fourth of the building and will be opening “Michy’s to go.”
Update: the post on Chariff's Facebook page stating there was a pre-lease with Bernstein was deleted after the publication of this story. (See a screen shot of the post in our photo gallery).
According to Lyle Chariff, president of the Chariff Realty Group, Bernstein’s new location won’t replace her restaurant on 6927 Biscayne Blvd., it will serve as an extension with a mini gourmet market where people can buy ready-to-go meals.
“Nothing has been signed yet, but there is an agreement,” Chariff said.
But Bernstein wouldn't say what she is planning for the property.
“Michelle Bernstein and her husband David Martinez have discussed the possibility of moving there, but that’s it,” said spokesman Larry Carrino on behalf of the power couple.
Carrino says they are in talks to potentially do something there, but that they haven’t even defined what the concept of the new eatery will be.
“We can neither confirm or deny that it will be a Michy’s to-go,” Carrido said.
The Chariff Realty Group’s Facebook page also displays a photo of Bernstein posing next to District 2 Commissioner Marc Sarnoff and Perricone, all sporting construction worker helmets and a shovels during the project’s groundbreaking ceremony last October.
Carrino denies that plans for a new restaurant have been finalized and adds that Bernstein and her husband were at the event to show support for their business partner, Perricone.
“Attendance at the groundbreaking doesn’t certify that what [the Chariff group] is saying is gospel,” Carrino said.
The building is slated for completion by mid-2012.
Bernstein, winner of a James Beard award--dubbed the Oscar’s of food--and a regular on food TV shows like Top Chef, opened Michy’s on gritty Biscayne Boulevard in 2006. That same year Food & Wine Magazine named Michy’s “Best New Restaurant.”
She also owns two restaurants in Miami’s Design District, Sra. Martinez and Crumb on Parchment.
