Venezuelans living in Florida are protesting the closing of their country’s consulate in Miami following the expulsion of the office’s chief diplomat.
Demonstrators gathered Saturday at a park in Miami.
Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez decided to close the consulate after Washington ordered Consul General Livia Acosta Noguera out of the country.
The expulsion came after an FBI investigation into allegations she had discussed a possible cyber-attack on the U.S. government while assigned to the Venezuelan Embassy in Mexico.
Protesters say the closing will cause major problems for the thousands of Venezuelans living in Florida, Georgia, North and South Carolina. They want to know how they will be able to vote in upcoming elections, renew passports or complete other transactions requiring consulate assistance.
