A federal judge Friday slapped a Miami River shipping company with a $1 million fine and five years of probation for oil pollution and other environmental crimes.

Antillean Marine Shipping Corp., which operates a fleet of eight cargo vessels, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Adalberto Jordan after pleading guilty to failing to maintain an accurate oil record book and to submit ballast water reports.

Half of the freight company's fine must be donated to the South Florida National Parks Trust, a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving the region's waterways.

The investigation into Antillean Marine was led by the U.S. Coast Guard.
