Miami High clinches district’s top seed

Miami Herald Writer

The Miami High boys’ basketball team went nine minutes without a field goal between the first and second quarters.

The Stingarees had numerous turnovers, missed nearly a dozen free throws and had only 33 points through three quarters.

But here’s what else the Stings got Wednesday night — a 56-46 victory over Coral Gables, a District 14-8A regular-season title and a berth in the GMAC tournament.

“We won, but we didn’t play well,” Stings coach Marcus Carreno said. “It was our senior night, and we had a couple of seniors who didn’t show up [in their play].

“That’s what I was scared of. They know they didn’t play well, but we were fortunate enough to get a win against a good team.”

Miami High improved to 17-4 overall and 11-0 in district play. Gables, which lost 71-59 in the teams’ previous meeting this season, fell to 14-4, 7-2.

Allen Baez led Miami High with 16 points, and Kembril Dervil added 10. Gables was led by Xavier Cruz, who had 13 points.

Miami High made 17 of 28 free throws. But Gables also struggled, making only 16 of 26. In fact, the Cavaliers almost went the entire second quarter without a field goal before Cruz hit a layup at the buzzer to tie it 21-all at halftime.

Miami High led 33-32 after three quarters and then finally started to pull away. The Stings scored the first five points of the fourth quarter, including a three-point play on a monster dunk and free throw by Jeffrey Thomas. Willie Walker added a pair of emphatic dunks later in the quarter.

Carreno said he also expects to see Gables in the eight-team GMAC tournament.

“They’re scrappy,” he said. “They are probably the most underrated team in the county. They get after you. They make you play sloppy.”
