Reagan, Ferguson make final

Reagan goalie Raphael Urbina stopped two penalty kicks to preserve his team’s victory Wednesday.

Reagan goalkeeper Raphael Urbina believes in luck — at least half the time.

For the second consecutive game in the Greater Miami Athletic Conference tournament, Urbina had the responsibility of helping the Bison survive a penalty kick shootout to win a big game.

Urbina came through once again.

“The key is to try to read the shooter’s eyes or body language before they take the shot,” he said. “But that’s only half of it. The other 50 percent is definitely luck.”

Urbina stopped two kicks in the penalty kick round Wednesday night to lift Reagan to a 3-0 shootout win over Killian in a GMAC semifinal at North Miami Stadium.

The Bison will try to win its first GMAC title, and avenge its only loss so far this season, when it takes on Ferguson 7 p.m. Friday at North Miami Stadium.

The Bison (18-1) battled the Cougars (14-2-2) to a scoreless tie in regulation behind stellar play from Urbina and defenders Rick Gomez and Federico Gallardo. Under GMAC rules, in the first two rounds teams proceed directly to the shootout round if there is a tie after regulation.

Gomez, Willie Delp and Pablo Georgakoplolus each converted their shots for Reagan. Killian’s first shot sailed over the goal. Urbina stopped the following two.

Urbina said he had played club soccer with some of the players from Killian and that the familiarity helped him in the penalty kick round.

“I know a couple of their guys tendencies since I’ve played with them before so I knew which direction they were going to go with the ball,” Urbina said.

Reagan defeated Coral Gables in the quarterfinal round on penalty kicks. But in that game, the Bison played a pair of 10-minute overtime periods since neither team nor the referees realized the GMAC rules for the first and second rounds.

“It’s a tired bunch after these past few games, and their stamina was running out in that second half,” Reagan coach Nando Da Silva said. “They made good defensive plays down the stretch. The biggest key has been how unified this team has been this season.”

•  Ferguson 2, American 0: Ferguson (16-1-3) defeated American in the other semifinal thanks to another stellar defensive performance. Goalkeeper Juan Dorado recorded his second shutout of the tournament.

Carlos Galvez broke the scoreless stalemate 25 minutes into the first half with a well-placed shot. Later in the second half a rush up the field ended with an insurance goal by Sergio Lujan. Dario Vanegas drew a defender to him and crossed it perfectly to Lujan for the score.

American’s best chance came early in the game, but forward Francisco Aguirre’s shot hit the post.

Both teams are among the best in Miami-Dade County this season with Ferguson having its sights set on state in Class 5A and American vying for the same in Class 4A.
