Former defensive back Tony Beckham, who played 56 games in the NFL from 2002 through ’07, was named coach of the Homestead High football team on Tuesday.
Beckham, 33, who is from Gainesville, inherits a 4-6 team at Homestead.
“He seemed like the right fit, and the community approved it,” Homestead athletic director Aaron Harris said in announcing the hiring.
“He seemed like a very organized guy, and we already have the assistant coaches to surround him.”
Beckham, who was not present for Tuesday’s announcement because of a family obligation, was an assistant coach at Fort Pierce Westwood and worked on the staff at Tennessee State University before coming to Homestead.
A college star at Division III Wisconsin-Stout, Beckham was a two-time All-American and is in his school’s athletic Hall of Fame.
The Tennessee Titans were impressed, drafting Beckham in the fourth round in the 2002 NFL Draft. In four years with the Titans and one with the Detroit Lions, Beckham had a total of 38 tackles and one interception.
Beckham replaces Bobby McCray, who coached Homestead for the past eight seasons, leading the Broncos to a 51-32 record and regional semifinal appearances in 2006 and ’07.
In addition to the Beckham announcement, Harris held a “Plan B” seminar for about 100 youths.
Harris said the goal of the seminar — which he hopes becomes an annual event — was to stress the importance of kids having a backup plan in case they are not among the small minority who can become a well-paid professional athlete.
Among the former players attending the seminar were Atlanta Falcons offensive lineman Brett Romberg and former NFL offensive lineman K.C. Jones.
