Miami-Dade shelter reopens for dog adoptions following distemper outbreak

ebrecher@miamiherald.com

After a week in lockdown because of a distemper outbreak, the Miami-Dade Animal Services Department is again offering dogs for adoption.

The department got laboratory results on Friday showing that 112 dogs at the shelter in Medley aren’t infected, according to Director Alex Muñoz. Those dogs can be adopted, along with all cats at the shelter, 7401 NW 74th St.

Another 63 dogs that are negative for the distemper virus remain in quarantine as a precaution. Five more tested positive but may be strong enough to fight it off.

However, 32 dogs “tested positive and were confirmed to have been actively shedding viral particles,’’ Muñoz said in a news release. “This group of dogs was euthanized due to the highly contagious nature of the disease and to protect the health of the other dogs in the shelter. Although this loss is very difficult to accept, the department is encouraged that more dogs have not been affected by this devastating disease.’’

Another 19 had to be euthanized earlier in the week.

The shelter still isn’t accepting new dogs. The rabies vaccine, microchip and spay/neuter dog clinic also remains closed.
