Intruder shot to death by 82-year-old homeowner

Miami Herald Staff

An 82-year-old man, startled awake by the sound of an intruder, opened fire Thursday morning.

The apparent intruder died on the porch. He never got inside.

The scene broke the early morning silence in the elderly man’s Daytona Beach neighborhood as police wrapped crime scene stretching across the street, according to the Daytona Beach News-Journal.

Police Chief Mike Chitwood said the intruder wore a stocking ski cap and gloves, and carried a hammer, screwdriver and a flashlight.

As the intruder, identified by the Orlando Sentinel as 24-year-old Tyler Orshoski, tried to get in, the homeowner opened fire through the door, the bullet slamming in his belly. The homeowner was identified as Charles Robbins.

"We're thankful he did something the criminal justice system couldn't do and he put this guy out of business this morning," Chitwood told the Sentinel.
