The search for Charlie Weis’ replacement as Florida’s offensive coordinator came to an end Wednesday with the announcement that former Boise State assistant Brent Pease would join the Gators’ staff.
Coach Will Muschamp said Pease would maintain the pro-style offensive philosophy established during Muschamp’s first season and mesh with the staff already in place.
“Really it was about bringing a guy in that was going to be a good fit for the room, bring some new ideas, bring some new energy to what we’re trying to do, but understand we’re not changing philosophically where we’re headed with this thing,” Muschamp said. “Brent understands that.”
Before coming to Florida, Pease coached at Boise State. He was the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in 2011 after spending the previous five years as the Broncos’ wide receivers coach.
Pease has 21 years of coaching experience, including 11 as a coordinator with stops at Montana, Northern Arizona, Kentucky and Baylor.
“Coach Muschamp and I share a lot of the same philosophies, so this was a perfect fit,” Pease said. “I want to be multiple in our offensive formations and have a balanced attack with tempo.”
Pease, who visited with the Gators during their preparation for the Gator Bowl in Jacksonville, will immediately begin recruiting. He reportedly signed a three-year deal worth an estimated $500,000 annually.
Pease will also serve as Florida’s quarterbacks coach, a factor Muschamp said was important in making the hire because the Gators will start a sophomore quarterback — either Jeff Driskel or Jacoby Brissett — next season.
“You got two young guys that need a lot of fundamental work as far as they continue to progress as a player, and it was critical to me to be able to bring a guy in that that’s his expertise,” Muschamp said.
