TALLAHASSEE -- It’s only the second day of the 60-day legislative session, but the Capitol will be jumping Wednesday. Here are five things to watch:
• Secretary of State Kurt Browning is scheduled to meet with Gov. Rick Scott at 11:30 a.m. Browning’s resignation as the state’s top elections official is anticipated this week, and this meeting is a signal that it’s imminent.
• The 22-member Senate Reapportionment Committee casts its first vote on a proposed remapping of all 27 congressional districts, including two new ones as a result of population growth.
• What’s worth watching is where the two new districts are created, because it won’t be long before candidates start jockeying for position to run for both of them.
• In the House, where resistance to an expansion of casino gambling is strong, the Business & Consumer Affairs Subcommittee will hold a workshop and take testimony on gaming.
• A top priority of major business lobbies will be discussed in that same committee hearing: Cutting the unemployment compensation tax on Florida businesses.
