Recycle old tech to benefit Miami schools

For many businesses and entrepreneurs, the New Year brings new gadgets. For those wondering what to do with the old, two local tech businesses are kicking off a new e-recycling campaign — with a twist.

It will benefit the Miami-Dade school district’s efforts to make all classrooms wireless.

The two companies, TECKpert and Preemo, are launching the effort Wednesday. It will run through the end of March.

The program aims to keep old devices out of landfills, give businesses a way to get rid of unwanted electronic devices and better connect students with technology.

Old computers and devices will be stripped down, the parts resold and the money will go to the Foundation for New Education Initiatives, a nonprofit arm of the Miami-Dade County School Board and led by schools chief Alberto Carvalho.

The goal is to raise $7 million — which could turn into $70 million in federal dollars through a grant-matching program.

“This campaign provides a great opportunity for individuals and businesses alike to help develop Miami’s e-cycling infrastructure,” said Adrian Esquivel, founder and chief expert of TECKpert, in a statement.
