The inside-outside tandem of guard Kyle Phanord (23 points) and 6-5 power forward Marquedis Bain (22 points, 10 rebounds) led the University School boys’ basketball team (14-1) to a 70-64 win over Lake Wales (10-3, No. 33 in the ESPN POWERADE FAB 50) in the Southern Series presented by Hoops Exchange Basketball Tournament.

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

Bailey Leal and Tori Danchak, Douglas, girls’ soccer: Leal scored the winner and Danchak had seven saves for her 12th shutout as the Eagles (14-2-1) blanked West Broward.

Andrew Wisdom, Cardinal Gibbons, wrestling: The reigning Class 1A state champion won the 138-pound division to lead the Chiefs to the Archbishop McCarthy Tournament title.

Egor Koulechov, Sagemont, boys’ basketball: Koulechov had a game-high 25 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Lions to a 56-48 win over Jupiter.

Alessandra Gonzalez, American Heritage, girls’ soccer: Gonzalez scored two goals to lead the Patriots (20-1-1) over Barron Collier, 5-2.

Nura Zanna, Coral Springs Christian, boys’ basketball: Zanna had a game-high 23 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Crusaders (11-2) to a 65-54 win over Miami Pace.

Samuel Huertas, Archbishop McCarthy, boys’ soccer: Huertas scored two goals in a 3-1 victory over Miami Palmetto.

Kayla Wright, Dillard, girls’ basketball: Wright had 14 points and a game-high 16 rebounds to lead the Panthers (12-3) to a 48-42 win over American Heritage.

Samantha Johnson, Pine Crest, girls’ basketball: The Freshman standout had a game-high 34 points to lead the Panthers (9-3) to an 86-72 win over Trinity Christian.

Danny Chapman, South Florida HEAT, boys’ soccer: Chapman had two goals to lead the Heat (9-4-2) over rival Westminster Academy, 4-3.

Mike Gibson, Coral Springs, wrestling: Gibson won the 106-pound division to help the Colts win the Steadwell Tournament title for the first time.

Nikki Haines, Cypress Bay, girls’ soccer: Haines had two goals in the Lightning’s 3-0 victory over Taravella.

Alessandra Gonzalez, American Heritage, girls’ soccer: Gonzalez scored two goals to lead the Patriots (20-1-1) over Barron Collier 5-2.

Amari Stewart, Everglades, girls’ basketball: Stewart had scored 12 points to lift the Gators past Cypress Bay 47-43.

Coral Springs Christian boys’ basketball coach Steve Fitzgerald was honored at halftime of the Crusaders’ home game against Lauderdale Lakes Academy on Monday for winning his 300th game against Somerset on Dec. 8.

Fitzgerald, who is 308-216 in his 19th year, has led the Crusaders and their 6-6 junior star forward Nura Zanna to a school-best 13-2 start and No. 3 rank in the Sourcehoops.com Class 3A poll.
