Art, entrepreneurship intersect at Broward exhibition

Promoting the development of the creative economy is the mission of Broward County’s Artist as an Entrepreneur Institute. For the fourth year, graduates of the entrepreneurship program are taking part in an exhibition that opens this week.

You can view their work at the “Doing Business as Artist Entrepreneurs” Art Exhibition, or DBA 2012, in Gallery 6 of the Broward County Main Library, 100 S. Andrews Ave. in Fort Lauderdale, from Friday through Feb. 27. The exhibit and opening and closing receptions are free.

The DBA 2012 exhibit will feature artwork by the following award winning local artists: Frank Crowley, Louis Davis, Nolan Hann, Michael D. Harris, Henning Haupt, Debra Kaszovitz, Amelia Monroe, JoAnn Nava, Elle Schorr and Bonnie Shapiro.

Each of the artists is a graduate of the Artist as an Entrepreneur Institute. This series of 18 classes held during the summer is designed to assist artists by cultivating and advancing their business skills, including help with setting up a business, writing a business plan, marketing and social media. Sponsored by Broward County, this course has taught 313 artists. For more information on AEI, go to www.broward.org/arts.

The opening reception is Jan. 25, from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., and the closing forum is scheduled for Feb. 22, also 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Each will feature presentations by art entrepreneurs. For more information, go to www.artistsdoingbusinessas.com.
