Fast on the heels of Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenezs move to slash the number of departments to 25 from 42, Commissioner Xavier Suarez is putting forth his own version of how to streamline the much-maligned county government.
In a lengthy report to the commission, Suarez calls for major changes, including selling off a raft of county-owned real estate and disbanding the countys 311 information line.
The former Miami mayor, noting that more than 3,000 county employees earn over $100,000 in salary and benefits, recommended the county cut salaries and cap salaries and benefits at $150,000 a year.
Suarez said he would slash the number of supervisors so the county would be managed more like a business and less like the top-heavy, almost indecipherable bureaucracy that exists today.
Much of what the commissioner is envisioning falls under the purview of the mayor. Still, the commission wields power through its vote on the county budget and funding of departments.
For now, Suarezs report is just a personal wish list. It remains to be seen whether he can generate any enthusiasm for the ideas with the rest of the commissioners.
