Quarter-by-quarter: Dolphins vs. Jets

dneal@miamiherald.com

First quarter

Impact player: Jets wide receiver Jeremy Kerley, operating as the quarterback, completed a 41-yard throw to tight end Matthew Mulligan to the Dolphins’ 25, setting up a touchdown.

Highlights: Dan Carpenter made a 44-yard field goal to put the Dolphins up 3-0. The defense produced two three-and-outs.

Lowlights: Five plays after Kerley’s 41-yard throw to Mulligan, a blown coverage left tight end Dustin Keller wide open for a 1-yard touchdown on a rollout by Mark Sanchez. Matt Moore stared down Brian Hartline deep up the right sideline before throwing that way and being picked off by Antonio Cromartie.

Second quarter

Impact player: Dolphins defensive end Randy Starks’ interception with nine seconds left in the half both ended a Jets scoring threat and put the Dolphins in position to close within 10-6 at halftime.

Highlights: Carpenter nailed a 58-yard field goal, the third-longest in Dolphins history, as time expired in the first half. That followed Starks’ interception of a Sanchez checkdown pass. Running back Steve Slaton burst through a hole at left guard for 28 yards, almost equaling his season output on one play.

Lowlights: Despite four presnap penalties on the Jets, the Dolphins allowed a 69-yard drive that ended with Nick Folk’s 31-yard field goal.

Third quarter

Impact player: Moore went 9 of 10 in the quarter, including 8 of 9 on the Dolphins’ second possession that exhausted the last 7 minutes 56 seconds of the quarter.

Highlights: After the Dolphins’ first possession, Brandon Fields nailed a 64-yard punt, a net of 52 yards. The Dolphins converted their last four third downs of the quarter, the most important being a third-and-9 from their own 7 on a 17-yard completion to Davone Bess.

Lowlights: The Dolphins weren’t able to feed off the momentum of the half-ending field goal, going three-and-out on their first offensive possession, then letting the Jets drive 33 yards after Fields’ punt swung the field position.

Fourth quarter

Impact player: Dolphins linebacker Marvin Mitchell. Mitchell’s interception and 55-yard return stopped a Jets drive 10 yards from a touchdown that would’ve given them the lead.

Highlights: Moore and Charles Clay ad-libbing on the 1-yard touchdown pass that gave the Dolphins a 13-10 lead. Starks intercepting Sanchez as he panicked under Jason Taylor’s pressure.

Lowlights: The Dolphins couldn’t put the Jets away or just suck more time off the clock after either Starks’ or Mitchell’s interception. They also allowed a frantic 80-yard drive in only 1:17 that ended with a touchdown by former Dolphin Patrick Turner.
