We don’t mean to spoil your holiday, but it looks like the end of the world, at least in one southern Mexico city. Tourism officials in Tapachula have installed a digital clock to count down the time left before the Dec. 21 solstice, when some believe the Mayan long-count calendar “runs out.” It might make you feel better to know that many Maya experts believe the apocalypse fears are a misreading of Maya texts that mention the date, saying the Mayan considered it the end of one calendar cycle and the beginning of another. Guess we’ll know on the 22nd.
