Special to the Herald

The YMCA of Greater Miami wants to help you — and your family — keep your New Year’s resolutions to stay fit.

On Sunday, the first of the year, the YMCA is offering memberships throughout Miami-Dade County for $1.

The price will increase by a dollar a day throughout the month of January: For example, it will cost individuals and families $8 to join on Jan. 8, $27 on Jan. 27 and so on.

Membership fees are normally $50 for students or adults and $80 for families, said Donn.

People of all ages and fitness levels are welcome.

The Pay the Date offer is a discount on the one-time yearly registration fee. Members still have to pay a monthly fee, which ranges from $41 for individuals, $33 for seniors and $25 for students. Family rates for a single parent and child is $53; two parents with multiple children pay $61

Unlike a gym membership, the YMCA does not require members to sign contracts. Financial assistance is offered depending on economic need.

“What better time to offer this special than at the beginning of a new year, making it easier for people to start and keep their resolution of leading a healthier lifestyle,” said Donn.

This is the third year the YMCA offers the “Pay The Date” in January promotion.

Each center offers its own schedule of health and wellness classes and programs. Classes typically include Zumba, spinning, step aerobics, yoga and Silver Sneaker classes for seniors, and are included in the monthly fees. Karate and youth sports are also available for children — but be sure to check with your local YMCA for a schedule of offerings.

The YMCA facilities in Homestead and North Pointe have pools; all of the centers house fitness gyms.

Charlotte Donn, associate vice president of YMCA of Greater Miami, said it’s a great opportunity to get a bargain on fitness.
