Misguided obsession

Re the Dec. 26 letter Cuban-American lawmakers punish families: Cuban-American lawmakers punish families because they believe that they are going to get rid of the Castros by starving Cuban society into submission. But many Cubans who held this position now believe that the best way to get rid of them is to try to free Cuban society from the “solitary confinement” they have endured for more than 50 plus years by lifting travel restrictions and gradually easing of the economic embargo. This, they hope, will foster opposition to the Castro regime.

Cuban-American lawmakers are obsessed with Fidel Castro just like politicians in pre-Castro Cuba were obsessed with Fulgencio Batista. Such obsession blocks now, as it blocked then, any alternative or solution to the Cuban problem.

Just like in the ’50s when we thought everything would be fine and dandy once we got rid of Batista, today’s politicians believe that the end of Castro would be the end of Castroism.

A new day in Miami Beach

I am profoundly disappointed with the May 13 and April 30 editorials, Politics at its worst and Dreaming of a convention center. The two editorials were full of false statements and “spin” provided by the city manager’s supporters and, apparently his very own unauthorized taxpayer funded crisis manager.

    The goal: more water conservation

Audubon Florida was happy to see the May 13 article South Florida cuts water use by 20 percent, on the success of South Florida’s water-conservation methods. Our region has made progress. But if South Floridians want water security in the future, more must be done through meaningful water conservation.

  • Better way to ‘purify’ voter rolls

Guess we have yet another Republican-influenced election year stunt with the 180,000 questionable “citizen status” verification voters.
