Jr. OB Classic to feature top teams

A1fernandez@miamiherald.com

For more than two decades, the Junior Orange Bowl Classic has given some of South Florida’s best high school basketball teams a chance to test their strengths against top teams from around the country.

The 23rd annual version begins Wednesday at Ronald Reagan High in Doral and will include some of the top teams in Miami-Dade and Broward Counties.

Miami Krop, Hollywood South Broward and Weston Sagemont, all of which reached the girls’ state final four last season, will be a part of a field that includes playoff regulars Miami High and Miami Monsignor Pace.

Krop (12-2) is led by star junior guard Iesha Small, and will open the tournament against Sagemont (5-4), the Class 2A state runner-up last year.

The boys’ bracket also includes Sagemont, the defending Class 2A boys’ state champion, as well as much-improved Hialeah Gardens and Coral Reef — a state champion in 2009. Miami Pace and Miami La Salle also represent Dade on the boys’ side.

Hialeah Gardens won three of four games last week to win the Kreul Classic Sweet 16 consolation bracket. Sagemont returns several talented players that should help it in its bid to repeat as state champions.

The tournament will also include perennial powerhouses from other states including Mount Lebanon, a Pennsylvania state championship regular in boys’ and girls’.

Center Point, a defending state champion from Alabama, and West Springfield, a state final four team from Virginia, round out the girls’ bracket. Archbishop Moeller of Ohio and Potomac of Washington round out the boys’ bracket.
