Miami Dolphins’ draft spot still not settled

Bjackson@miamiherald.com

The Dolphins will enter the final week of the season with the eighth pick in the NFL Draft, but with the chance to move up or down a bit before draft order is settled.

The Dolphins (5-10) are currently behind the Colts and Rams (both 2-13), Vikings (3-12), Jacksonville (4-11), Cleveland (4-11) and Tampa Bay (4-11) and Washington (5-10).

The Redskins likely would pick ahead of the Dolphins if the teams finish tied because Washington’s opponents have a much worse record, which is the first tiebreaker. That’s potentially very damaging to Miami, because the Redskins – like the Dolphins – also are expected to covet a top young quarterback prospect. Washington closes the season at Philadelphia.

The Browns also are looking for a quarterback and definitely will pick before the Dolphins if they lose their finale at home against Pittsburgh.

Unless the Dolphins’ draft position improves in the final weekend, they might need to trade up if they want to draft Baylor’s Robert Griffin III. Griffin and Oklahoma’s Landry Jones – the top quarterback prospects behind Andrew Luck – have not said if they will turn pro.

• The Colts will clinch the No. 1 pick – and the right to draft Luck – by losing next Sunday at Jacksonville. The Rams would pick first if they lose to the 49ers and the Colts win.

Fox’s Jay Glazer said Saturday there’s still considerable support for Sam Bradford inside the Rams’ organization, and that general managers around the league told him that the No. 1 pick (Luck) could net three first-round draft picks in a trade.

“This may be the most valuable No. 1 pick ever,” Fox’s Jimmy Johnson said.

The Colts have suggested they would select Luck if they have the No. 1 pick, regardless of Peyton Manning’s health situation.

• No surprise here: CBS’ Charley Casserly reported that the Saints will place the franchise tag on impending free agent Drew Brees if they cannot agree to a new contract in the next couple of months. Assuming Brees never makes it to the open market, the upcoming free agent class has no one who would qualify as the franchise quarterback that owner Stephen Ross covets.

Alex Smith, Jason Campbell, Kyle Orton and Matt Flynn are among the other free agents, but none represent a big upgrade over Matt Moore.

THIS AND THAT

The Dolphins’ coaching search could be impacted by the San Diego Chargers, especially with regard to Jeff Fisher, who is expected to interview for the Miami job. The San Diego-Union Tribune, which reported last month that Norv Turner would be fired after the season, reported before Saturday’s game (a Chargers loss to Detroit) that Turner might survive. Fisher, who grew up in Southern California, might be more inclined to take the Dolphins job if the Chargers job isn’t an option.

• Former Dolphins coach Tony Sparano is on the Cowboys’ radar as a possible assistant coach on Jason Garrett’s staff next season, ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reported Saturday.

• This marks the first time the Dolphins have had a 1000-yard rusher (Reggie Bush) and a 1000-yard receiver (Brandon Marshall) in the same season. Bush enters next Sunday’s Jets game with 1086 yards rushing (eighth most in a season in Dolphins history). Marshall has 1177 receiving yards.

• Jake Long left with an arm injury early in the second quarter and was replaced by John Jerry. Interim coach Todd Bowles had no update on Long’s status.

• Daniel Thomas left, for good, in the second quarter with a sprained knee but said it wasn’t a serious injury.

• Vontae Davis left for good, in the fourth quarter, with an elbow injury, but said he will be fine.

• Bush suffered a right leg injury late in the game but said "I don't think it's serious."

• Matt Moore’s 103.9 quarterback rating over his past eight games is sixth-highest for a Dolphins quarterback over half a season, behind only Dan Marino and Bob Griese.

• Will Yeatman started in place of tight end Anthony Fasano, who missed the game because of a mild concussion. The Dolphins’ other inactives: offensive linemen Ryan Cook, Will Barker and Ray Feinga, running back Steve Slaton, defensive end Ryan Baker and quarterback Pat Devlin.
