Wood Tavern in Wynwood holds grand opening with free drinks, DJs

Wynwood's newest bar, Wood Tavern, is holding a grand opening Wednesday night with DJs Lolo and Ryan Evans. That by itself would be enough to draw a crowd, but there's one more tidbit that's sure to bring out the masses: an open bar, with complimentary cocktails, from 9 to 10 p.m.

If you've haven't been there yet, owner Cesar Morales has put a lot of thought into a "chill," cosy vibe — and it seems to have caught on with the local crowd. Here's how Miami Herald writer Lesley Abravanel described Wood when it opened for Art Basel:

"Newly opened in Wynwood, Wood Tavern, 2531 NW Second Ave., features a speakeasy-esque selection of old fashioned cocktails as well as old school, down home drinks with a modern twist including their Shine Punch, which is made with Original Moonshine™ and fresh fruit — white trash sangria, if you will, which, as we know is ironically chic these days.

The Tavern also boasts an outdoor beer garden, which is lovely, but even better is that prices start at $4. The bar, says a news release, “was needed for a clientele that appreciated the Wynwood Arts District, good service, affordable drinks and a cool atmosphere reminiscent of a speakeasy you would stumble upon in San Francisco or New York.

The music direction would make any American legend like Steve McQueen, Dennis Hopper and Ross Meyer proud from vintage tunes to modern selections that include Radiohead, Feist, The Sonics, Pulp, The Beatles, James Brown and Nancy Sinatra. In other words: painfully hip but carefully untrendy, if that makes any sense."
