Quarter-by-quarter breakdown: Dolphins at Bills

A1fernandez@miamiherald.com

First quarter:

Impact player: With the Dolphins trailing 7-0 and needing a big play, Charles Clay ended the quarter by catching a pass in traffic at the Bills’ 41 and then gaining an extra 19 yards to the 22-yard line. The play set up the Dolphins’ first score on the first play of the second quarter.

Highlights: Cameron Wake got an early sack on Ryan Fitzpatrick that put the Bills in second-and-30. Buffalo did not convert a first down and was forced to punt. Later in the quarter, a 62-yard punt by Brian Moorman nearly pinned the Dolphins back inside their own 10, but Davone Bess made a nice return to the Miami 32.

Lowlights: Reggie Bush fumbled after a hit by Aaron Williams, and George Wilson recovered at Dolphins’ 42. The turnover led to the Bills first touchdown after C.J. Spiller ran it in from 24 yards out. His score followed another long run of 18 yards.

Second quarter:

Impact players: Matt Moore made a couple of good throws early in the quarter to help the Dolphins take a 13-7 lead by halftime. On the first play of the quarter, a 22-yard touchdown pass was hauled in by Anthony Fasano. He later connected on a 31-yarder to Brian Hartline.

Highlights: Vontae Davis intercepted Ryan Fitzpatrick and gave the Dolphins an opportunity to score at the Bills’ 24. The Dolphins settled for a field goal, but it proved to be a key score later.

Lowlights: The Dolphins failed to score touchdowns twice in the red zone. On the first attempt, Daniel Thomas was stuffed for a 1-yard loss on the Bills’ 1 and Matt Moore couldn’t connect with Brandon Marshall on two successive throws. On the second, Reggie Bush gained only 1 yard on two carries and Moore couldn’t connect with Brian Hartline in the end zone.

Third quarter:

Impact players: The Dolphins secondary continued to make big plays to frustrate the Bills offense. Reshad Jones intercepted a short pass over the middle to halt a drive by the Bills at midfield. Later, cornerback Vontae Davis came up with his second interception of the game when he picked off a Ryan Fitzpatrick pass at the Buffalo 43 that was intended for receiver Stevie Johnson.

Highlights: Dolphins quarterback Matt Moore and Brandon Marshall connected for the play of the game when Moore found Marshall deep downfield. Marshall caught the long pass at the Bills’ 20 and finished a 65-yard touchdown that gave Miami a 20-7 lead.

Lowlights: Marshall, however, had a forgettable play that cost the Dolphins a score with 7:19 left in the quarter. Marshall caught a pass in the flat, but was stripped by Drayton Florence, who then recovered the fumble.

Fourth quarter:

Impact player: Reggie Bush capped his big day with a 76-yard touchdown run that put the game out of reach early in the fourth quarter. Bush finished with 203 yards, which was the fourth-best effort in a single-game by a Dolphin running back. He is the third Miami back to reach 200-plus yards in a game.

Highlights: The Dolphins rushed for 254 yards as a team. In addition to Bush’s long touchdown score, Daniel Thomas had his best run of the day when he broke through the line and ran down the sideline to the Bills’ 17. The play set up Dan Carpenter’s third field goal.

Lowlights: The Dolphins gave up a pair of touchdowns to the Bills that nearly helped Buffalo steal the game. Ryan Fitzpatrick capped long drives with touchdown passes to C.J. Spiller and Derek Hagan. Buffalo also recovered an onside kick at its own 48 after several players couldn’t recover the ball.
