South Floridan wins top spot at ISAF Sailing World Championships

scocking@miamiherald.com

Sunday marks the final day of racing in the ISAF Sailing World Championships in Perth, Australia, but one South Floridian already won the top spot and two others from the Sunshine State earned berths in the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

Anna Tunnicliffe of Plantation – the 2008 Olympic gold medalist in sailing’s Laser Radial class – and teammates Debbie Capozzi and Molly Vandemoer won the world championship in women’s match racing at Perth. The victory doesn’t guarantee them a spot in this summer’s Games; the trials will be held at another regatta in May.

Several Floridians were instrumental in qualifying the U.S. for the Olympics in their classes. Miamians Mark Mendelblatt and Brian Fatih won bronze in the Star class. In women’s 470s, Sarah Lihan of Fort Lauderdale and skipper Amanda Clark of Shelter Island, N.Y. took 12th place. Trevor Moore of Naples and teammate Erik Storck of Huntington, N.Y. earned a berth in Sunday’s medal race in the 49er class.

Zach Railey and sister Paige – both of Clearwater – are on their way to the Games as a result of this week’s regatta in Perth. Paige won a bronze medal in the Laser Radial class while Zach – the 2008 silver medalist in the Finn class -- finished ninth in the 72-boat fleet at Perth.

Many of the athletes from around the world competing in Perth will have another chance to go head-to-head in US SAILING’s Rolex Miami Olympic Classes Regatta Jan. 22-28 on Biscayne Bay. While the regatta is not an Olympic qualifier, it gives hopefuls another chance to check out the competition ahead of the main event.

In other sailing news, more than 500 young sailors aged eight to 18 from 22 countries will gather in Miami Dec. 26-30 for the Orange Bowl International Youth Regatta. Sailors will compete in Optimist dinghy, Laser, Laser Radial, Laser 4.2 and 420 boats. The event is hosted by Miami’s Coral Reef Yacht Club, Biscayne Bay Yacht Club and the US Sailing Center.

The local sailing calendar gets even busier with Quantum Key West 2012 January 15-20. Racing teams from more than a dozen countries are slated to compete in Melges 32, Melges 24, Farr 40, Farr 400 (making its class debut) TP52, and Mini Maxi classes in the waters off the Island City.

  • South Florida Fishing Report

IslamoradaSportFishing.com reported plenty of dolphin are being caught outside the outer reef. Most of the action has been under birds and around floating debris 10 to 14 miles offshore. Bottom fishermen were catching a lot of mutton, mangrove and yellowtail snapper plus an assortment of grouper while fishing the reefs. In the gulf and bay, cobia, sea trout and permit can be found over the wrecks and rock piles. Tarpon are being caught along the bridges and in the channels on live blue crabs.

Catching blackfin tuna requires plenty of patience

It’s late May and many South Florida offshore anglers are fishing in the twilight zone.

  • IN MY OPINION

Back to their love: the precarious sea

After 11 days as temporary land lovers in Miami, the sailors of the Volvo Ocean Race returned to the place where they are most fulfilled: The sea.
