As speculation heats up that Miami-Dade Commissioner Xavier Suarez will join the wide pack of challengers to County Mayor Carlos Gimenez next year, Suarez says a bid is not out of the question.
“It’s certainly not being ruled out, but it’s not my intention right now, and it’s not something that I’m focusing on,” Suarez said Friday.
Suarez, a former Miami mayor, said he has formed a new political action committee called Imagine Miami that is focusing on county government reform.
Suarez, a Harvard-educated lawyer, said he also is preparing to back a county commission candidate for the District 11 seat that is expected to be vacated next year by Commission Chairman Joe Martinez, who has announced plans to run against Gimenez in the August primary.
A key deterrent to Suarez’s joining the county mayor’s fray: money.
“I frankly don’t know that I’d have the resources to run,” he said. “It’s a big county and I’m not very good at fundraising.”
