South Florida fans gearing for WWE WrestleMania Miami

Rock vs. Cena: a house show divided

Miami Herald Writer

It was apparent at last week’s WWE raw house show at the Bank Atlantic Center in Sunrise that South Florida fans are a house divided when it comes to Rock versus John Cena at WrestleMania 28 on April 1 at Sun Life Stadium in Miami Gardens.

Jamar Butler, decked in replica WWE championship gold and Rock T-shirt, supports his fellow Miami native.

“When it comes to WrestleMania I have to go with The Rock,” Butler said. “Cena stands for everything I like. He doesn’t give up, and he doesn’t quit or allow hatred to get into his system. Rock though is the hometown favorite, so I have to go with the hometown favorite. I have been to the one in Orlando, so to have it here feels great. I don’t have to travel but 15 minutes to get to WrestleMania.”

Miami resident Ismal Santos is a longtime fan, which you can tell from his old school Intercontinental title and Mr. Perfect shirt.

“I used to like Mr. Perfect and Randy Savage, so this belt means a lot,” Santos said. “Rock wore the Intercontinental championship and is from here. You have to go with him.”

Miguel Suarez’s son Miguel Suarez Jr., 7, is looking forward to cheering on the leader of the CeNation. The elder Suarez plans on dressing up as the Undertaker with junior attending WrestleMania as Rey Mysterio.

“I pick Cena over The Rock because Rock put the Rock Bottom on Cena,” Suarez Jr. said. “I also like Cena’s moves and everything about him.”

Miamian Victor Baloy is another WrestleMania first timer. He is predicting The Rock to come out victorious at the grand spectacle.

“It’s Rock over Cena because it’s his hometown, and he needs to win,” Baloy said. “He is coming home. It’s going to be electric. The Great One is going to pull it off. I’m excited. I always wanted to go. I planned on going to the one in Orlando, but didn’t. I am happy I finally get to go.

“I don’t have to fly out of town to go see it. It’s in my own backyard. If I don’t go now, I may never get to see it in person. I’m looking for a ‘Boots to Asses’ shirt. I want to buy it and wear it that night.”

Colton Eisenberg, 9, of Coral Springs disagrees with the choice. He and his brother Ryan, 10, side with Team Cena.

“I think Cena is going to give him the Attitude Adjustment,” Eisenberg said. “It will probably take three of them for him to win.”

Matthew Celano, 12, of Tamarac also believes Cena will defeat Rock.

“I like how he is respectful,” Celano said. “Rock is kind of mean to John Cena when they were tag team partners. I think Cena will come out on top because he has been wrestling more years straight than The Rock. WrestleMania is going to be really awesome. I think after they wrestle they will have more respect for each other.”

His friend and Coral Springs resident Alex Michaels (no relation to HBK), 12, is a fellow Cena fan.

“I’m on Cena’s side,” Michaels said. “I like his attitude. He is nice. He helps people who are sick. It’s going to be close at WrestleMania. I think Cena and The Rock are going to make it a street fight.”

Albert Marrero of Westchester doesn’t see how anyone would go against Team Bring It.

“I have to ask how old are these kids voting for Cena,” Marrero questioned. “That’s who his fans are. Rock is from Miami, and he brings it. He is motivational. Have you read his tweets? They are inspiring. He is a legend. This is my second time going to WrestleMania, and it’s going to be crazy.”

Despite wearing a Zack Ryder shirt to the event, Margie Hernandez of Hialeah, is going against one of the Woo Woo Woo Kid’s biggest supporters.

“Rock is hot,” she said. “I like his movies and his wrestling career before he retired. I went to Atlanta last year, but this will be the best WrestleMania ever.”

Carlos “The Rock” Duran is billed from Hialeah. Duran wants to see how the story pans out between Cena and Rock. The verdict is still out.

“I think making this match a year in advance was ballsy move,” Duran said. “It’s hard to keep the interest up for the whole year. I think it will be great. It’s great for the community. I think it should have been down here a long time ago.”
