ANDRE C. FERNANDEZ

Coming in to Monday’s game, Krop knew that Carol City’s Deandre Burnett was the Miami-Dade County’s leading scorer.

What they didn’t know was how to stop him.

Burnett scored a game-high 43 points against the host Lightning to lead the Chiefs to a 68-56 victory Monday night.

Burnett, who is averaging nearly 40 points per game, shot 14 of 28 from the field and made 11 of his 16 free throws. He also had two assists and two steals.

Carol City (5-2) trailed Krop 21-13 at the end of the first quarter but went on a 15-4 second quarter run that gave the Chiefs the lead. At the half, Burnett had 25 of his team’s 28 points.

Krop, which got a team-high 21 points from Larry McKnight and 15 from Dylan Karrell, cut the deficit to 54-49 midway through the fourth quarter — but never got any closer than that.

Chiefs coach Barry Robinson had high praise for Burnett.

“He’s a once-in-a-decade kid,” he said. “Deandre has done everything we asked him to do, and he’s improved every year he’s been in the program.”
