Innings-chewer Buehrle signs with Miami Marlins

The Marlins officially closed their deal with Mark Buehrle, who has pitched at least 200 innings in each of the past 11 seasons.

For the third time in only five days, the Marlins rolled out a new weapon, put a jersey on his back and had him smile for the cameras, not that it’s getting to be old hat for baseball’s new big spenders.

“We’ve never done this before,” Marlins executive Larry Beinfest said with obvious sarcasm before handing a uniform to starting pitcher Mark Buehrle.

Buehrle on Friday officially signed a four-year, $58 million deal.

In return, the Marlins are hoping he will chew up innings while racking up wins the same way he did for the Chicago White Sox for 12 seasons. The lefty brings a career mark of 161-119 in what will be his first engagement as a National League hurler.

“He’s thrown no-hitters, he’s won world championships, and he’s won Gold Gloves,” said Beinfest, the Marlins president of baseball operations. “The only thing we don’t know about him is whether he can hit, but we’re about ready to find out.”

Interjected Buehrle, laughing: “I cannot hit.”

Buehrle is the last of the Marlins’ “big three” signings this week, following on the heels of closer Heath Bell and shortstop Jose Reyes. But, as Beinfest pointed out, the Marlins have been pursuing Buehrle since the first day of free agency on Nov. 3.

“He was the primary free agent pitching target, and we had his name circled for quite some time,” Beinfest said.

The fast-working Buehrle is known for his steady durability. He has thrown at least 200 innings over each of the past 11 seasons and ranks at or near the top of the fastest workers on the mound.

“I’m not a hard thrower, so I think that takes some pressure off your body and your arm,” Buehrle said in explaining his long run of 200-inning seasons. “I try not to throw too many bullpens between starts, kind of save your bullets for the game.”

Buehrle said that while he spoke with a few teams, the Marlins and Nationals pushed hardest to sign him. He said new Marlins manager Ozzie Guillen, his manager with the White Sox over the past eight seasons, sent him text messages, encouraging him to sign with Miami.

Buehrle, who spent his entire life in the Midwest, said the idea of living in South Florida was intriguing to him and his wife.

“My wife and I both said we never lived in an area where we had beaches,” Buehrle said. “If we’re going to go for a change, let’s go for the complete opposite of what we’ve been used to.”

• While the Marlins were welcoming Buehrle on Friday, they cut ties with pitcher Clay Hensley, whom they designated for assignment rather than tender a contract to the right-hander.

Hensley is arbitration eligible and stood to have received upward of $1.5 million had the Marlins decided to keep him on the staff.

• Hanley Ramirez was at Disney World on Friday, where he spoke about his new teammates. “We’re moving ahead … getting some good ballplayers,” Ramirez said in a TwitVid posted by @DisneySports. “I think the front office is doing the best they can do put a good team on the field.”
