Thursday: Lecture-demonstration by violinist Lara St. John, recital by violinist Anastasia Khitruk.

Friday: Lecture-demonstration by violinist Kim Kashkashian, recital by cellist Matt Haimovitz.

Saturday: Lecture by composer John Corigliano 7 p.m., concert with Haimovitz, Kashkashian, Khitruk and St. John 8 p.m., Colony Theater, 1040 Lincoln Rd., Miami Beach; $65, students and seniors $25, VIP $125 (includes reception).

South Florida Classical Review

The American Masterworks String Festival opened with a dynamic recital Tuesday night by violinist Lara St. John at the intimate Little Stage Theater in Miami Beach. This first in a weeklong series of America music performances presented by the SoBe Institute of the Arts concentrated on the populist side of contemporary composition and transcriptions, with future programs promising an edgier side of Americana.

    Physically ripped and emotionally expansive, the Haitian dance troupe Ayikodans returned to Miami and the Adrienne Arsht Center on Friday evening. And that made it easier to look at the troupe and its work.

    In David Auburn’s Pulitzer Prize-winning ‘Proof,’ a young woman who has inherited her father’s mathematical genius struggles with the idea that she may also share his madness. Katherine Michelle Tanner plays the daughter, Kenneth Kay her dad, and the cast also features Cliff Burgess and Sarah Grace Wilson. William Hayes directs the production at Palm Beach Dramaworks, 201 Clematis St., West Palm Beach. Performances are 8 p.m. Wednesday-Saturday, 2 p.m. Wednesday and Saturday-Sunday (some 7 p.m. Sunday shows), through June 17. Tickets are $55 (students $10).     Embedded: A Photojournalist Captures Conflict and Resistance, a show drawn from 800 images photojournalist Jim Nickless, of Broward County, shot of CIA-funded Cuban rebels training to overthrow Fidel Castro, will be on view May 24-Aug. 11 at Miami Dade College’s Freedom Tower Gallery.
