NASCAR driver Joey Logano of Joe Gibbs Racing competed in South Florida recently during NASCAR Championship Weekend at the Homestead-Miami Speedway.
Logano’s first major NASCAR win was the Meijer 300 at Kentucky Speedway in just his third start in the 2008 Nationwide Series. Logano, 21, made history becoming the youngest driver to win a Nationwide Series race at 18 years, 21 days old.
Logano also was the youngest winner in Sprint Cup Series history when he won the 2009 Lenox Industrial Tools 301 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway at 19 years, 35 days. The previous youngest was teammate Kyle Busch in 2005 at 20 years, 125 days.
Logano is the youngest winner in two of NASCAR'S three top divisions. He is also the first NASCAR driver to be born in the 1990s to compete in NASCAR's three major divisions.
And he is the youngest NASCAR driver to guest host WWE Monday Night Raw. Logano and Busch co-hosted WWE Monday Night Raw in 2009.
Logano discussed his night on WWE TV.
• Who did you have the most fun with (Big Show, Jericho, Miz, Swagger, the Bellas, Eve, Hornswoggle) as co-guest host on WWE Monday Night Raw (on Oct. 26, 2009) and what was that experience like?
Logano: “The wrestler that was most fun to meet was the Big Show for sure.”
Logano is 6-1, 165 pounds. Big Show is 7-0, 440.
Logano: “The whole experience was very interesting. I was really nervous to be honest before we went out on stage. I wasn’t sure what to expect because I’d never seen WWE live before, but when we walked out on stage and the fans went crazy, it was awesome. It’s hard to explain, but the cars were revving in the background, and everyone was screaming. It was just awesome.”
Joe Gibbs of Joe Gibbs Racing is also a three-time NFL Super Bowl winning coach with the Washington Redskins.
What did Mr. Gibbs (did he watch) and your family think of your guest hosting role on WWE Raw?
Logano: “I don’t think Joe saw it, or if he did, he only saw clips and has never said anything to me about it. I don’t know what he would say.”
Is it now mandatory that every member of Joe Gibbs Racing be WWE fans?
Logano: “I don’t think so. There were definitely guys on the team who wished they could be there for sure. I think a lot of them watched it that night, at least, because they all commented on it.”
How much did co-host Kyle Busch help in getting you familiar with the wrestlers/superstars? Were there any talks of either of you or both getting in the ring to compete?
Logano: “I don’t think Kyle knew what to expect either. We did joke about getting into it together in the ring, but I didn’t want to hurt him (laughing).”
Would you ever consider stepping into the ring for a match against any of the WWE superstars like the Big Show or Hornswoggle?
Logano: “I’m 165 pounds of steel. I’d take any of them on. Ha!”
A lot of kids are into WWE, and NASCAR is involved with kids. How good is it for NASCAR and WWE to combine forces?
Logano: “I think they both provide amazing entertainment for families, and it’s something everyone can get behind and have fun with. I was amazed at how many people at WWE Raw knew who Kyle and I were. Anytime you can get yourself in front of an audience of fans and maybe some people who don’t know about our sport is great.
“I know there was a ton of NASCAR fans at WWE that night, but I am sure there was a lot who didn’t know much about NASCAR. If something like that gets them curious about the sport and they tune in, then that helps everyone and vice-versa for the WWE this weekend.”
WWE Hall of Famer Sgt. Slaughter was the grand marshal for the NASCAR Nationwide Series championship race, the Ford 300, during NASCAR Championship Weekend at the Homestead-Miami Speedway.
