La Nina may bring more rain than some regions of the country would like, but for ski resorts in the West it’s a welcome weather pattern.
For the second winter in a row, La Nina is expected to dump more snow than usual in the Pacific Northwest and Rocky Mountains, site of most U.S. ski resorts. Last year, for instance, the Whistler Blackcomb resort in British Columbia had its second snowiest season on record, and the Arapahoe Basin resort in Colorado stayed open until July 4, its longest ski season in 14 years — all due to the weather pattern.
Meanwhile, ski resorts everywhere spent the off-season upgrading their facilities. A number of resorts have added snow-making guns and new grooming equipment. Several have built new zip lines. Some have added lifts or restaurants and expanded ski schools and other facilities. A few have added new terrain. See box for details of some of the more extensive improvements.
Airlines are gearing up for the ski season as well. Starting this month, major airlines will be operating short hops from their hubs to ski resorts. Travelers headed to the western resorts from South Florida usually will have to fly to Denver, Dallas or another hub, then either connect to smaller airports near ski areas or drive to the resorts in a rental car or ski resort bus. American Airlines does have a daily seasonal flight from Miami direct to Eagle-Vail from Dec. 15 to April 2.
Air travelers should be aware that most airlines now charge extra for checked baggage, including ski equipment. This charge has led many skiers to leave their own skis home and rent equipment at their destination. Rental rates vary by equipment, season and location. Example: Skis.com’s Sport Package for beginners to intermediates ranges from $19 to $52 per day.
As usual, ski resorts offer some of their best deals in the early season, before the Yule holidays. The next best deals come in January, before the real high season gets under way in mid-February.
With their negotiating power, ski clubs often can get good deals on ski trips. The Miami Ski Club this year has arranged two trips — to Steamboat Jan. 21-28, $1,525, steamboat@miamiskiclub.net; and to Park City March 10-17, $1,390, parkcity@miamiskiclub.net. Prices are per person, double occupancy, and includes air fare, lodging, ground transport, a dining event and pre- and post-trip parties, but not lift tickets. Prices are subject to change prior to ticketing.
Here are some examples of ski resort deals. All are subject to availability and booking deadlines and might change without notice. Certain fees and taxes may be extra.
