New iPrep Academy magnet school debuts at Felix Varela High School in West Kendall

Miami Dade County Public Schools will hold a ribbon cutting ceremony for the new iPrep Academy at Felix Varela High School in West Kendall on Monday, Nov. 28.

WHO:          Miami-Dade County Public Schools administrators, Felix Varela Senior High staff, International Preparatory Academy staff, students, parents and the public.

WHAT:         Grand Opening Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony for iPrep Academy at Felix Varela Senior High School

WHEN:          Monday, Nov. 28 at 1 p.m.

WHERE:        Felix Varela Senior High School,  15255 SW 96th St., in West Kendall 

WHY:           iPrep@Varela is a new and innovative magnet academy at Felix Varela Senior   High School that provides students with an opportunity to participate in a rigorous curriculum that is technologically enriched.  iPrep@Varela students will participate in various college preparatory and college level courses, and will be provided with flexible scheduling if they choose to participate in internships and community-based projects.

 <span class="leadin"><strong>NATIONAL MATH CONVENTION</strong></span>: The Mu Alpha Theta math team of Doral Academy was awarded 16 trophies at the National Convention in Orlando. The team earned tenth place out of 55 schools across the country.

    The Mu Alpha Theta math team of Doral Academy Preparatory School won 10th place and the Huneke Distinguished Sponsor Award in the National Mu Alpha Theta Convention in Orlando. The team also earned 15 awards in individual categories.

 <span class="leadin"><strong>SCHOLARSHIP WINNER</strong></span>: Lorraine Freytes of Florida International University earned a $5,000 scholarship from the Florida Chapter of the Lupus Foundation of America.

    FIU student earns $5,000 Lupus Foundation Scholarship

    Lorraine Freytes of Florida International University was awarded the $5,000 Michael Jon Barlin Scholarship from the Lupus Foundation of America’s Florida Chapter. Freytes wrote an essay about how lupus has affected her college experience. She was diagnosed at age 11, and is now a third-year nursing student with hopes of helping others with chronic illnesses.
