Resistance Pro is celebrating the success of its inaugural wrestling event “Black Friday.”
Wrestlers Harry Smith, The Sheik, El Generico, the Briscoe Brothers, Cheerleader Melissa and Serenity were some of the big names in the ring Friday, Nov. 25 at Excalibur, a Chicago nightclub.
Chicago’s own Melanie Cruise was crowned the first Resistance Pro Wrestling Woman’s Champion, but there was a draw for the men’s heavyweight title. The re-match will occur in January.
Resistance Pro is a partnership between Smashing Pumpkins singer/songwriter Billy Corgan and brothers Jacques and Gabriel Baron.
“I am on tour with the Smashing Pumpkins in Europe but was able to watch the entire show via Skype in Prague,” Corgan said in a release. “Black Friday was great. I want to thank all the fans who came out to watch. I’ll see you in January at the next Resistance Pro event.”
The second Resistance Pro event is Friday, Jan. 13 at Excalibur, 632 N. Dearborn St., Chicago. Titled Rush, it will feature many of the same big names from the debut show along with some surprises.
• Resistance Pro is initiating a concussion-awareness program to educate young wrestlers and adults about the warning signs and dangers of concussions.
Resistance Pro is teaming with the Chicago Concussion Coalition and leading concussion doctors from Midwest Orthopedics at Rush.
Dr. Jeffery Mjaanes, medical director of the Chicago Sports Concussion Clinic at Rush, and his colleague, Dr. Krystian Bigosinski, attended the first show to begin concussion screenings with the wrestlers.
At the January event, screens with each wrestler will be done before and after.
Resistance Pro is the first professional wrestling promotion to adhere to the guidelines set by the Sports Legacy Institute. Corgan is friends with SLI founder Chris Nowinski and turns to the former WWE superstar for advice and guidance.
• As the vocalist, lead guitarist and songwriter for The Smashing Pumpkins, Billy Corgan is one of the most compelling figures in rock.
As a writer, producer, player and singer, he’s contributed to recordings by the likes of Cheap Trick, Ric Ocasek, New Order and Hole.
In 2004, Corgan published “Blinking with Fists,” a book of poetry that debuted on the New York Times Best Seller list. In 2008, Fender unveiled the Billy Corgan Stratocaster guitar, produced to Corgan’s exacting specifications.
• Resistance Pro is an independently owned and operated professional wrestling promotion based in Chicago. It was founded in 2011 by creative director Billy Corgan and co-owners Jacques and Gabriel Baron.
The Baron brothers are from the south side of Chicago and wrestled for Steel Domain in Chicago. Their great grandfather, Louis LaMande, was a wrestler in the carnival circuit in France as well as a resistance fighter for France during World War II.
