The Lourdes volleyball team needed a boost this offseason.

In 2010, The Bobcats had a promising season with legitimate state final four aspirations end abruptly with a regional quarterfinal loss to Coral Reef.

A new, more aggressive offensive system, installed by new coach Pedro Penate has helped put Lourdes in the mix again this season.

The Bobcats continued to pick up key victories Tuesday when they beat district rival Southwest, 25-19, 25-13, 25-14 at the Eagles’ gym. Lourdes (15-2) is in first place in District 15-8A and remains undefeated in district games.

“The team’s confidence was very down after last season,” Penate said. “We needed to change our whole approach and become a stronger offensive team.”

Penate is in his first year coaching, but brought plenty of winning experience from his playing days at Southwest. Penate was a member of Southwest’s boys’ state championship team in 2003 and also played at state the following season.

Penate said he has tried to help the Bobcats play a more unpredictable style similar to the college level that involves moving players around to throw off defenses.

Playing at Penate’s alma mater Tuesday, Lourdes showed that skill on its attack as it jumped ahead early and took control of the match after a close start.

Junior middle hitter Isa Vilar had nine kills and controlled up front with seven blocks. Senior outside hitter Sophie Del Campo, who played despite back spasms, finished with 10 digs and two blocks.

Penate credited junior setter Gabi Maseda for conducting the team’s attack throughout the season. Maseda finished with 30 assists, three digs and three kills.

In addition to its district success, Lourdes picked up a few solid victories last week at the Chaminade Invitational. The Bobcats beat Archbishop McCarthy, Mater Academy and Pace, and played Pompano Beach and Boca Raton St. Andrews well in defeat.
