Marc Jonas and Jeffrey Rubinger have joined KPMG LLP as principals in South Florida. As a principal in the firm’s advisory performance and technology group, Jonas will be based in Fort Lauderdale and will focus on supporting market development activities. Prior to joining KPMG, he was a regional account executive for Capgemini U.S. As a principal in the firm’s international corporate services practice, Rubinger will meet the growing international tax needs of clients in Florida, especially Miami and Fort Lauderdale, while supporting the firm’s Iberoamerica team and serving Latin American-based multinationals with operations or investments in the United States. He will be based in Fort Lauderdale. He comes to KPMG from the tax practice of Holland and Knight, where he was a partner in its Fort Lauderdale office.
EDUCATION
Christopher “Kit” Starratt has been promoted to vice president of Barry University’s division for mission and institutional effectiveness. He has been with the university for 18 years, previously serving as the university’s vice provost. In his new role, he will oversee several areas including enrollment services, office of institutional research, office of mission integration/organizational effectiveness and office of the registrar.
HEALTHCARE
David A. Lubarsky has been named chief executive officer of the UHealth Physician Practice and associate vice president for UHealth Practice Administration. He will help direct and oversee all medical disciplines, governance, clinical activities, personnel, budgets, space and other resources of the UHealth Physician Practice. Since 2007 he also has been the senior associate dean for safety, quality and risk prevention.
Luis Mier has been named chief financial officer and Manuel Leon has been promoted to vice president of wholesale and over-the-counter programs at Navarro Discount Pharmacy. Prior to joining Navarro, Mier was the corporate controller at Donald J. Pliner, a luxury footwear firm. Leon will be responsible for Navarro’s wholesale division. Previously, he was director of OTC plans. He has been with Navarro for more than three years.
MEDIA
Emilio Romano has been named president of Telemundo. He will lead the broadcast network and its 14 owned stations. He also will oversee the news and sports divisions, Telemundo International, Telemundo’s Digital Media group, and the network’s sales and marketing units. Romano’s career spans the media, Internet and aviation industries. From 2004 to 2007, he served as CEO for Grupo Mexicana de Aviacion, where he was responsible for the airline’s largest financial restructuring in its 87-year history.
NONPROFIT
Matt Haggman has joined the staff of the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation as program director/Miami. He will work with Trabian Shorters, vice president /communities, in leading the foundation’s efforts to foster an informed and engaged South Florida community. Haggman has worked as a journalist in Miami for nearly 10 years. He covered legal affairs for the Daily Business Review. He joined the Miami Herald in 2004, initially reporting on the real estate industry. Since 2009, he has covered Miami-Dade County government. In 2008, he co-authored an award-winning series, “Borrowers Betrayed,” which detailed lax state oversight of the home loan industry that contributed to Florida’s rise in mortgage fraud. The series won numerous awards, including the Gerald Loeb Award.
