About Open Media Miami

Open Media Miami is an independent company that works in partnership with The Miami Herald to provide neighborhood news coverage for a series of neighborhoods along the Biscayne Corridor.

Our articles are published in the Herald's Biscayne Corridor section, and will occasionally appear in the print edition of the paper. Our source and contributor network can be found at OpenMediaMiami.com, and is meant as a platform where users can submit tips, ask questions, share photos and videos, list events, or directly contribute their own stories or opinion pieces. Contributions made on that site will be edited before they are posted to MiamiHerald.com.

Open Media Miami is edited and coordinated by Jared Goyette, who works with a small team of contributors and volunteers.

These are our goals:

Provide credible, transparent and civic-minded journalism that is made for the web. We’ll make every effort to get the story right, and when we do get it wrong, we’ll let you know. Likewise, if a politician has the facts wrong, we’ll say so. Our intention is be a valuable source of information for residents in the communities we cover. That starts by always telling the truth.

Be local. We’ll cover the neighborhood issues and events that have been overlooked by other outlets, and we’ll do it by being present, every day, in the communities we cover.

Listen to our audience and engage with our readers. We want to know what you think about our coverage and what we should be covering next. We will respond to every story tip, question or suggestion, and give credit where credit is due.

Link often and link generously. We know that we’re one site of many that cover local issues. If another media outlet or blog has a story that might be of interest to our users, we’ll link back. Got a story you want us to link to? Just let us know. Share the tools. Being “open” is not just about giving users a chance to join in and participate in our coverage – it’s also about spreading the knowledge and tools that make that coverage possible. We plan to organize community workshops in which we’ll bring in experts to talk about writing for the web, computer-assisted reporting, how to use Freedom of Information laws, and social media for small businesses and nonprofits.

Collaborate. Don’t exploit. Like any local or “hyperlocal” journalism website, we depend on contributions, tips and suggestions from our users and from community organizations. If someone shares their content, work or ideas with us, we credit them and link back. Our goal is to be a resource to the communities we serve by providing reliable, independent journalism, and a platform that can be utilized for the sharing of information and community collaboration.
