Cutler Bay-Whispering Pines Fourth of July Celebration like a 'movie set'

Ernie Sochin has been attending the Cutler Bay-Whispering Pines Fourth of July Celebration for more than 30 years.

For Sochin, the event is reminiscent of a Norman Rockwell painting.

"îIt's a hometown event,'' said Sochin, a Cutler Bay council member. "It's almost like being on a movie set.''

The 43rd annual celebration kicked off at 9 a.m. July 4 around Whispering Pines Park, Southwest 88th Court and Ridgeland Drive.

Hundreds lined up to watch the floats, march and enjoy the afternoon cookout with their neighbors.

For Jean Welsh, one of the parade coordinators, there is no other way to celebrate Independence Day.

"I've been coming to this event for more than 40 years,'' Welsh said. "It really brings out the meaning of the day."
