No confirmation yet on the Allianz Championship moving to Aventura, but deal likely soon

While there has been no formal announcement that the Allianz Championship, a Senior PGA golf tournament that has been played in Boca Raton since 2007, will come to Aventura next year, city officials seem certain that the decision will be announced soon, and the  tournament will indeed be played in the city near year, bringing with it publicity, crowds and a much needed jolt to the local economy.

The deal is not yet confirmed, even though Mayor Susan Gottlieb seemed to indicate it might be in her state of the city address last week. The Palm Beach Post reported earlier this month that the deal is "certain" though has yet to be announced.

Tournament Director Ryan Dylan said negotiations are still ongoing between the management company Prolinks Sports, the city of Aventura, the PGA Tour, tournament sponsor Allianz Life Insurance Company, and Fairmont Turnberry Isle Resort & Club, the golf course and hotel that would host the tournament.

"There are a lot of parties to put together here and things to put together and get confirmed so I wouldn't put a timetable on it right now," he said.

Dylan, however, indicated that he would like to see the tournament occur in Aventura next year.

"Turnberry is a wonderful facility," he said. "They offer a tremendous amount of things that we haven't experienced in the last couple of years. So we are working toward trying to get something done here officially."

City officials are enthusiastic about the tournament's arrival. Gottlieb said the tournament, which would likely be televised, would be a "great opportunity to showcase the city." City Manager Eric Soroka said the city was "very excited about the event" coming to Aventura as it would bring a "positive economic impact" to local businesses and the economy.

Letter: Northeast Dade city makes financial sense

My family and I have lived and worked in Northeast Miami-Dade County for 36 years. We include the so called named areas of The Château, Coventry, Highland Lakes, Oak Forest, Oak Hammock, Ojus, Presidential Estates, Skylake, Sunswept, etc. We are 18,000 strong. Many things have changed over these years — guard gates, increased home invasions, common areas in need of repair, overcrowded roads, expanding development.
