Miami-Dade commissioner proposes new board for Jackson Health System

jdorschner@MiamiHerald.com

In another signal that county government leaders don't trust Jackson Health System's governing body to solve the system's dire financial problems, Commissioner Carlos A. Gimenez plans to present an ordinance Tuesday that would provide for a new oversight board if Jackson has trouble meeting its financial obligations.

The board would consist of seven members -- four appointed by the County Commission, one by the mayor, one by the head of the Miami-Dade County Legislative Delegation and one by the governor.

Some days ago, Mayor Carlos Alvarez proposed a transition board -- with members appointed by himself -- to take over Jackson if its financial woes deepened. On Wednesday, he wrote a letter urging the Public Health Trust to get a recovery plan to the commission for its Tuesday meeting -- a week faster than the Trust's own imposed deadlines.

Several commissioners voted against the Alvarez proposal because they were bothered by the mayor having too much power over Jackson, which is slated to lose $229 million this year unless drastic measures are taken.
