Hart writes from the heart

jvarsallone@MiamiHerald.com

Bret The Hitman Hart wrote an autobiography Hitman: My Real Life in the Cartoon World of Wrestling, and one of his subjects -- former wife Julie Hart -- decided to pen her own.

A long writing process, Julie covers her life -- before, during and after Bret.

She gives insight on her rough, emotional childhood along with the ups and downs of her personal life. She discusses Bret and the Hart family and more.

``My book is going to be dark,'' Julie said. ``It will obviously surprise a lot of people and family, of course, because those are the first people who are not going to like what you say or don't remember it that way.''

Julie took her time on this project.

``I'd been writing it for six years,'' Julie said. ``Bret and I always said we'd write a book about ourselves because our lives were both so interesting.

``Originally, he said, `Oh, you should let me write your book after I've done mine.' I was researching my family roots, and I started looking more into my family, trying to understand them.

``Everything else just fell into place. I've done some really crazy things, especially being with Bret all those years.

``Biographies are really hard to write. You're really bearing your soul to people, especially your family. They're either going to agree or disagree with what you've written. They'll like it. They'll deny it. It's a tough decision what you're going to say in a book. You want to be remembered for good things because once the story is out, it's out. That's it. There's no turning back.

``I think the important thing for me writing a book is I really want to make a difference with my story. One person, a woman who can relate to me or someone who can relate to me. `Oh yea. I feel just like her,' and to go from there.''

In Canada, the Hart family, led by soon to be WWE Hall of Famer Stu Hart, ranks with the best the country has to offer -- comparable to wrestling fan and hockey icon Wayne Gretzky.

For three generations and counting, the Hart name goes beyond the Canadian borders, sparking much interest worldwide in the pro wrestling/sports entertainment community.

Julie Hart, the mother to Bret's four children, may not have been born a Hart, but she is responsible for helping continue the Hart bloodline. Also, her sister married Tom Billington, better known to wrestling fans as the Dynamite Kid.

``I've always had a journal,'' Julie said. ``Bret had tapes. I had journals. Those were my thoughts. I never shared those with anybody. A couple of years ago, my sister, Michelle Billington, and I started writing together because she was married to Dynamite Kid [Tom Billington].

``We said let's combine our stories together. We grew up together. We know what happened to us as kids. I said, `You can co-author it with me.' My sister is also a teacher, and as time went, it got too hard for her to write and teach, and she had twins. Actually, she has five kids. It was just too much.

``My place is a great place for connecting, webbing with people. There was a fellow who was reading my blogs. One day he wrote me and asked me how the book was coming, and I told him it was not. I put it down again because my sister can't go on with it. He said, `You should read some of my stuff.' So I went on his site and read his blogs, and I'm like, `Holy cow. This guy is brilliant. What a writer.'''

Jack Walk began working with Julie, co-authoring her book.
